Product Description
Miranda’s disbelief turns to fear in a split second when an asteroid knocks the moon closer to the earth. How should her family prepare for the future when worldwide tsunamis wipe out the coasts, earthquakes rock the continents, and volcanic ash blocks out the sun? As summer turns to Arctic winter, Miranda, her two brothers, and their mother retreat to the unexpected safe haven of their sunroom, where they subsist on stockpiled food and limited water in the warmth of a wood-burning stove. In her journal, Miranda records the events of each desperate day, while she and her family struggle to hold on to their most priceless resource--hope. Includes a teaser to the companion novel, The Dead and the Gone.

Amazon.com Review
It's almost the end of Miranda's sophomore year in high school, and her journal reflects the busy life of a typical teenager: conversations with friends, fights with mom, and fervent hopes for a driver's license. When Miranda first begins hearing the reports of a meteor on a collision course with the moon, it hardly seems worth a mention in her diary. But after the meteor hits, pushing the moon off its axis and causing worldwide earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanoes, all the things Miranda used to take for granted begin to disappear. Food and gas shortages, along with extreme weather changes, come to her small Pennsylvania town; and Miranda's voice is by turns petulant, angry, and finally resigned, as her family is forced to make tough choices while they consider their increasingly limited options. Yet even as suspicious neighbors stockpile food in anticipation of a looming winter without heat or electricity, Miranda knows that that her future is still hers to decide even if life as she knew it is over. Veteran author Susan Beth Pfeffer, who penned the young adult classic The Year Without Michael over twenty years ago, makes a stunning comeback with this haunting book that documents one adolescent's journey from self-absorbed child to selfless young woman. Teen readers won't soon forget this intimate story of survival and its subtle message about the treasuring the things that matter most—-family, friendship, and hope.--Jennifer Hubert

best book
i love this book
for some people it may seem boring since it is written as a journal or it may be unreal for others but for me it is the moral behind it that counts. It reminds me that i should be grateful to my life and everything around me instead of wasting time and being unappreciative.... and it makes me wonder how i will survive a day without food and heat....
i wouldnt read it again but i love this book and totally recommend it !

Life as We Knew It changes life as we know it now... ( ginnygrant )
Our mother-daughter book group read this wonderful story last month and were all fascinated with it. Some of us even read it in one session, it was so spell-binding! The girls in the group are 7th graders and were able to relate to the characters in the book, how they might feel and act, and the moms also were captured by the bravery, level-headedness and organizational skills that the families displayed. Without giving away too much of the tale, it certainly made us all think about what is really important to us physically, financially, and emotionally, and how important family and friends are. Definitely a must-read!

Depressing but good
I think this book is well written but depressing. It's about a meteor hitting the moon and pushing it towards Earth throwing off the Earth's balance. Gas prices go up and food grows scarce. Plus, there are volcanoes and tsunamis that kill millions of people. As you can imagine, this isn't exactly a happy book but I can't stop reading it. If you're going to read this book, here's a hint: DON'T read it before bed or you're sure to have nightmares!

Wonderful book!
My daughter suggested I read this book and I'm happy she did. I was so engrosed in the story that I didn't realize how long I had been reading. Before I knew it I was 2:30 in the morning. I plan to read her next book about the same event but from another person's point of view. The reviews look like the second book will not disappoint me either!
