Product Description
They hired him. They trusted him. Now they don't want justice--they want revenge....For four years, Patrick had often wondered how it would feel if they caught him. Now he was terror-stricken. Practically naked and strapped down like an animal, he knew the next few hours would be insufferable.... Once he was a well-liked, well-paid young partner in a thriving Mississippi law firm. Then Patrick Lanigan stole ninety million dollars from his own firm--and ran for his life. For four years, he evaded men who were rich, powerful, and would stop at nothing to find him. Then, inevitably, on the edge of the Brazilian jungle, they finally tracked him down. Now Patrick is coming home. And in the Mississippi city where it all began, an extraordinary trial is about to begin. As prosecutors circle like sharks, as Patrick's lawyer prepares his defense, as Patrick's lover prays for his deliverance and his former partners wait for their revenge, another story is about to emerge. Because Patrick Lanigan, the most reviled white-collar criminal of his time, knows something that no one else in the world knows. He knows the truth....

Amazon.com Review
Literary slugger John Grisham returns with a story about-- surprise!--a lawyer in trouble. Patrick Lanigan had been a young partner in a prominent Southern law firm. He had a beautiful wife, a new baby girl, and a bright future. Then one winter night Patrick was trapped in a burning car; the casket they buried held nothing but ashes. A short distance away, Patrick watched his own burial then fled. A fortune was stolen from his ex-firm's offshore account. And Patrick ran, covering his tracks the whole way. But, now, they've found him.

Thrilling and well written
Took this one on vacation with me to Florida, it's one of those books you cannot put down. The opening six chapters or so are excellent (although the torture scenes were a little too much for me, so I speed read those!), and i absolutely love court room scenes, and Grisham is by far the king of those. This is perhaps my seventh Grisham novel, I think the guy keeps getting better and better, certainly this book has a more polished feel (perhaps he was writing with a movie in mind, but you never know). It does certainly read like a Hollywood movie - I'll have to check after this review wether it's been made into one. Overall, a fantastic vacation read and highly recommended. I love stories, and as stories go this is great. He doesn't waste too much time on descriptions and flowery language, and the plot moves along at a thrilling pace.

Grisham's most entertaining in a while... ( jeffrobertslongisland )
AFTER JOHN GRISHAM'S FIRST 3 NOVELS, I THOUGHT HE COULD BECOME ONE OF THE GREATEST AUTHORS EVER. HE THEN WENT DOWN HILL AND COMPLETELY DISAPPOINTED ME, EVEN THOUGH I CONTINUED TO READ EACH NEW RELEASE. THE PARTNER WAS A TURNAROUND. AS WITH ALL HIS NOVELS IT MOVES VERY FAST AND KEPT MY ATTENTION. I LIKED THE STORY LINE MUCH BETTER, ALTHOUGH IT DID BECOME PREDICTABLE. THIS BOOK WAS GOOD, BUT COULD HAVE BEEN GREAT. THERE IS NOT A TON OF CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT BUT THE STORY WAS GREAT. A GOOD FAST READ.

An exhilirating read
Fast paced, highly entertaining, believable characters, good dialogue, well thought out story. Grisham has such a masterful mind. I enjoyed this book very much.

I didnt like the ending.... ( toybox56 )
I read this book with the usual anticipation I have for this author. The ending, however, threw me for a loop. I was quite disappointed in this "artsy" ending.

A bag full of surprises ( manugw )
This great plot starts with a bang in the first chapter and does not let it go until the last word of the last one. As you approach the ending chapters the thing gets better and loose ends dragged along get revealed. It has great twists and turns masterly crafted to fit with the beginning of the story. Entertaining, gripping, intelligent and featuring a deep sense of humor it qualifies as a superb thriller, worthy to be included among the best I have ever read. It features no boring chapter. Great Job Mr Grisham I liked it better than all of your other works
